We all know the classic enemies of sleep: screens late at night, stress, and caffeine consumed too late in the day. But there is another, far more discreet culprit that most of us completely overlook: hydration levels. Too little water during the day can disrupt your night. And conversely, a night that is too short can leave you more dehydrated by morning. This silent vicious cycle deserves a closer look.
Two pillars of wellbeing in constant dialogue
Sleep and hydration are not two independent topics. They share a common hormonal regulator — vasopressin (also known as antidiuretic hormone, ADH) — which orchestrates both water retention in the kidneys and certain phases of the sleep cycle. Understanding this mechanism is already understanding why the two are so intimately linked.

How dehydration can harm your night
When the body is short on water at the end of the day, several mechanisms can interfere with falling asleep and staying asleep. This does not mean that mild dehydration will systematically ruin your night — research on this point remains nuanced — but the physical discomfort signals are very real.
Symptoms that make falling asleep harder
When you go to bed in a dehydrated state, your body may express several discomforts that delay or fragment sleep:
- Dry mouth and throat: dryness of the mucous membranes is one of the first subjective signals of insufficient water intake.
- Headaches: even mild dehydration is associated with headaches, which can make falling asleep difficult.
- Muscle cramps: dehydration disrupts electrolyte balance (sodium, potassium, magnesium), which can trigger nocturnal cramps and wake you in the middle of the night.
- Feeling of body heat: water plays a role in thermoregulation; a hydration deficit can interfere with the natural body cooling that accompanies sleep onset.
Studies have reported a negative effect of dehydration on subjectively assessed sleep parameters, even though objective measurements by polysomnography under controlled conditions yield more mixed results — highlighting the importance of individual variability and the severity of the hydration deficit.
The role of vasopressin: a shared conductor
Vasopressin is released in increasing quantities during the second half of the sleep cycle. This late-night peak helps the kidneys concentrate urine and limit water losses overnight. It is an elegant mechanism: the body anticipates the hydration fast of sleep.
But if you wake up too early — or if your sleep is fragmented — you may "miss" this vasopressin peak. The kidneys then eliminate more water than necessary, and you wake up more dehydrated. This is precisely what researchers in the Rosinger et al. study identified as the explanatory mechanism behind the link between short sleep duration and insufficient hydration upon waking.
The vicious cycle: less sleep = more dehydration
The study published in the journal Sleep in 2019 by Rosinger et al. analysed data from more than 26,000 American and Chinese adults. It showed that sleeping around 6 hours per night was associated with significantly more concentrated urine — a biological marker of inadequate hydration — compared to those sleeping 8 hours. This result was consistent across both populations, which strengthens its robustness, even though it is an observational association that does not allow direct causality to be established.
Furthermore, during sleep, the body continues to lose water naturally: through breathing and perspiration. This insensible but real loss accumulates over the 7 to 8 hours of a normal night, and contributes to the mild dehydration many people feel upon waking — hence the value of hydrating well in the hours before bed, without overdoing it.

The temptation of a large glass of water before bed: good idea?
Intuitively, you might think that drinking a lot just before going to bed is enough to compensate for an under-hydrated day. This is precisely what is best avoided. A recent study published in Sleep Science and Practice by Bayaskar and Sharma (2026) provided real data on this point: excessive fluid consumption in the two hours before bedtime (beyond 500 ml) was associated with more nocturnal awakenings and reduced sleep efficiency, compared to moderate or low consumption.
The reason is straightforward: urine production, which naturally slows during the night thanks to vasopressin, is short-circuited by a large fluid intake just before bed. The result: trips to the bathroom that fragment sleep and reduce the deep, restorative phases.

Four profiles, four common mistakes
The heavy coffee drinker
They compensate for afternoon fatigue with a late coffee, which delays sleep onset and increases urinary losses. They go to bed mildly dehydrated and with residual caffeine still active in their system.
The evening exerciser
They sweat heavily late in the day and do not adequately replenish their reserves before going to bed. The result: possible nocturnal cramps and fragmented sleep.
The chronic short sleeper
They string together short nights (<6 h) without measuring the consequences for their hydration. They wake up tired AND dehydrated, without connecting the two.
The evening "binge drinker"
Aware that they have not drunk enough during the day, they compensate by downing a large glass (or several) just before sleeping — and wake up two or three times in the night to use the bathroom.
The ideal time windows for staying hydrated
The goal is not to drink less, but to drink at the right time. Science and common sense converge on the same strategy: spread fluid intake throughout the day and gradually reduce it as bedtime approaches.

Good evening habits that won't have you waking at night
Here is a practical approach, grounded in the available evidence and easy to integrate into a routine:
- Hydrate early and regularly throughout the day. A well-spread intake prevents you from arriving at a deficit by evening. If you notice signs of dehydration (dark urine, dry mouth, mild fatigue), make up the shortfall before 6pm, not after.
- Gradually stop fluid intake 2 hours before bed. This window gives your kidneys time to process ingested fluids without calling on your bladder in the middle of the night. If you are very thirsty, a small glass (100–150 ml) is preferable to going to bed uncomfortable.
- Account for caffeine. Caffeine is a mild to moderate diuretic: it increases urinary losses and can therefore worsen a hydration deficit. - Think about electrolytes if you exercise in the evening. After a late workout, rehydrating with plain water alone may not be enough. A small salty snack or a mineralised water helps restore the sodium-potassium balance, reducing the risk of nocturnal cramps.
- Monitor your urine colour in the late afternoon. Pale yellow to straw-coloured urine indicates satisfactory hydration. If it is dark yellow or amber after 5pm, drink more — now, not at bedtime.
- Protect your REM sleep. Since vasopressin is released mainly at the end of the night, anything that shortens sleep (stress, early waking, caffeine too late in the day) deprives the body of this protective hydration mechanism. Looking after your sleep is also looking after your hydration the next morning.
What does science actually say? A nuanced picture
It would be inaccurate to claim that any mild dehydration destroys sleep: a reference polysomnography study (Aristotelous et al., 2019) found no significant differences in objective sleep parameters between a mildly dehydrated state and a properly hydrated state in healthy young adults. But that study involved a small number of male participants and used a crossover protocol of one night per condition, which limits its scope.
Other work, including a recent crossover study using a connected sleep sensor, found positive associations between fluid intake and REM sleep duration, total sleep duration and sleep efficiency — although the overall results between the two protocols did not reach statistical significance in the full group.
Caution is therefore warranted: effects likely vary according to the severity of dehydration, individual profile, age and other factors. What does appear robust, however, is the link in the other direction: short sleep is associated with inadequate hydration, via vasopressin.
