☕ Caffeine
≤ 200 mg per dose
✅ Single dose of no concern
EFSA 2015 — a single dose of up to 200 mg raises no concern for a healthy adult, roughly two espressos. This is not a daily target: the daily mark is 400 mg.
< 200 mg
🤰 Limit during pregnancy
EFSA recommendation — the precautionary threshold during pregnancy (caution mode is available in the app). The WHO sets 300 mg; PauseCafé applies the more cautious threshold.
< 400 mg
🟡 Healthy adult limit
EFSA, FDA & ANSES 2021 threshold — beyond this, some people may experience anxiety or disturbed sleep
> 400 mg
🟠 At-risk zone
Nawrot et al. 2003 — anxiety possible. Drake et al. 2013 — sleep disturbed for up to 6 hours afterwards
> 1000 mg
🔴 Very high level
Well above the health authorities' recommendations. If you regularly consume this much, speak to a healthcare professional.
💧 Hydration
2 L
💧 WHO recommendation, healthy adult
That's 8 glasses of 250 ml — the default goal in PauseCafé. Adjustable from 4 to 12 glasses depending on your activity and needs.
2.3 L
🤰 WHO recommendation, pregnancy & breastfeeding
That's 9 glasses of 250 ml — applied automatically in caution mode. Water needs increase during these periods.
PauseCafé is built on scientific recommendations validated by the world's leading health authorities.
The agreement between EFSA (EU, 2015), the FDA (United States) and ANSES (France, 2021) on 400 mg of caffeine a day is a solid scientific consensus. The EFSA recommends staying under 200 mg a day during pregnancy (the WHO sets 300 mg; PauseCafé applies the more cautious threshold).
For hydration, the WHO recommends around 2 L a day for a healthy adult (total water needs, including drinks). This rises to 2.3 L during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
